Ants are social insects which live in colonies, usually underground. Thousands of ants can make up a colony and they are very effective at surviving because of their ability to work together towards the common goal of caring for their queen. Ant colonies are comprised of at least one queen and her workers. The workers take care of foraging for food to feed the young and the protection of the queen. The 3 most common species of ants found in our region are:
The carpenter ant: Large, black ants that are approximately 5/8th of an inch in length. They make burrows in damp wood for nesting purposes, which can ultimately lead to damage of sound wood surfaces. Unlike termites, these ants do not consume the wood they damage, they are simply removing small pieces in order to make room for their nests.
The odorous house ant: Small, dark brown to black ants, which range in size from 1/20th of an inch to 1/16th of an inch in length. These ants get their name from the rotten coconut odor they omit if crushed or threatened.
The pavement ant: Small, reddish brown to black ants, which are approximately 1/8th of an inch in length. They nest in the cracks and crevices of pavement and stone landscape pavers, but they can also infest a building, especially ones with concrete slab foundations.
Having provided pest control in Allentown and throughout many PA counties for a long time, we have a keen understanding of these pests and their behavior and our exterminators can tell you these small scavengers will enter your home or business looking for a source of moisture and easy access to food. Ants feed on sugar, cheese, meats, vegetables, grease, peanut butter and dead insects. Ants often enter a home through cracks around windows or doors, but they can find numerous entrances to your home or building. Once inside, if they establish a nest, the growing ant colony can become a problem quickly as ants mature from juveniles to adults within a matter of days.
Most ants in PA are considered nothing more than a nuisance; however carpenter ants have the ability to cause structural damage when they break down and hollow out the wood surfaces in your home or business in order to form their nests.
Proper identification of what species of ant is infesting your property is the key to effectively getting rid of ants. These insects can be a difficult pest to get rid of due to the nature of their foraging habits and colony development. Only a small percentage of ants within a colony are actively foraging for food, so it is important to inspect and locate where the ants are coming from. It is entirely possible for ants to be foraging long distances and the nest may not actually be located on your property. A Moyer Service Professional™ can identify what ant is present, locate where they are foraging and help you get rid of ants with 3 levels of service available.
Trying to get rid of ants on your own can actually make things worse because over-the-counter sprays and repellents can cause a phenomenon called "budding" in which ants split from their home nest in order to avoid the repellents and will actually start new colonies on their own. Moyer Service Professionals™ are trained to seek out foraging ant trails around your property in an effort to locate and eradicate the entire colony. Sometimes, this may eliminate the need to use pesticides on the interior of your home.
The health and safety of our customers, their families or employees is very important to us and that is why we use Integrated Pest Management products and treatments that are EPA registered for pest control use.
